With the film starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin scheduled for nationwide release next month, May feels like the perfect time to rediscover Daphne du Maurier’s mysterious, thrilling My Cousin Rachel. The Guardian placed this classic firmly ‘In the same category as Rebecca, but an even more consummate piece of storytelling’ while New York Times Book Review found My Cousin Rachel every bit as as moody and brooding’.

Ahead of the fortieth anniversary of the Virago Modern Classics list next year, we want to help you discover more even exceptional writing by classic women writers. With this mind, we’re excited to introduce the brand new Virago Modern Classics book club.

Every month we’ll choose a book for you to read or rediscover from the Virago Modern Classics list, and to help you get more from your reading we’ll share author biographies and run book club discussions on social media. Throughout the year we’ll be hosting events with our partners, and give you the chance to win our book club picks.

This month’s VMC book club pick is The Enchanted April, by Elizabeth Von Armin. First published in 1922, The Enchanted April follows four very different women through a revelatory month in each of their lives. The Virago Modern Classic edition includes an introduction from Sarah Dunant.
