Virago Modern Classic Book Club – The Charioteer

Categories: Competitions,News

This July marks fifty years since the creation of the Sexual Offences Act of 1967, which decriminalized homesexual acts between men in England and Wales, and birthed the modern LGBTQ movement in Britain. With Pride Festival kicking off on Saturday 24th June, there couldn’t be a better time to shed some light on this (somewhat) forgotten gem. First published in 1953, The Charioteer is a tender, intelligent coming-of-age novel and a bold, unapologetic portrayal of homosexuality.

Sarah Waters calls The Charioteer ‘a snapshot of a particular – and particularly fascinating – cultural moment, and . . . a deeply romantic story of love fulfilled against the odds.’ And if you haven’t yet read this subtle, intelligent and deeply moving novel from one of the greatest writers of the 21st century, now’s your chance. We’ve got five copies to give away. Simply fill your details in the form below, making sure to read our terms and conditions first. Winners will be announced on 19th June.

Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of each book on Virago’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on the 1st of the month, and do let us know what you think of The Charioteer using #VMCBookClub.
