Friday Favourites: scary children’s movies

While we all like to pretend that we’re all grown up, switch on any one of these movies and you will remember what it was like to be kid hiding behind the sofa. Here are 8 movies that we love, but are scarier than any horror movie ever made.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

A classic Chirstmas / Halloween mashup, Tim Burton’s animated masterpiece is nonetheless absolutely terrifying – mostly down to the mayor, and his creepy spinning head.

2. Princess Mononoke

All of Hayao Miyazaki’s best work borders on the darker side of things, and Princess Mononoke is no exception. Never mind the huge cursed boars, the apes stare directly into your soul.

3. The Black Cauldron

This one is not for the faint hearted. Beside the terrifying, demonic Horned King, theres just something about the dodgey mid-80s animation that chills you to the bone.

4. James and the Giant Peach

Perhaps they are supposed to be the good guys, but the idea of being stuck inside an enormous peice of fruit, with equally enormous, wise-cracking, stop-motion bugs is the stuff of nightmares.

Because everyone knows that puppets are not ok.

6. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

One of my all time absolute favourites, and yet I still have to hide behind a pillow whenever Judge Doom laughs.

7. Fantasia

With obviously the best soundtrack of any animated movie ever, and admittedly with a lot of scenes that only involve baby flying horses and hippos in tutus, I still get scared everytime Micky opens that spell book.

If you haven’t seen this movie, you probably still think that all animated rabbits are friendly, adorable, not-blood-covered rabbits. You are incorrect.
