The Spaceborn Few special first edition comes complete with stunning endpapers designed by the very talented Kiku Hughes. We fell in love with Kiku’s work when she entered (and won!) the Wayfarer’s fanart competition we ran last year and so we couldn’t be more delighted at the opportunity to work with her again.
We are THRILLED with the result.
When we asked Kiku what inspired her to illustrate this scene, she said:
“I wanted to illustrate Eyas at work almost immediately upon reading her first few chapters. I love sci-fi that delves into the cultural practices of space-faring people, particularly the points where necessity becomes ceremony. I was so interested in the idea that humans needed a way to simulate the natural life cycle that would take place on earth, and their whole concept of death changed because of that. I’m also just a big fan of plants in general, so Eyas was the perfect subject. Her scenes show life, death, and all the ways humans have adapted to both life and death without a planet.”
Kiku is a comics artist and illustrator in the Seattle area. Her work has been featured in the Beyond and Elements anthologies, and in Short Box #7. She is currently working on her first graphic novel, “Displacement,” about her grandmother’s experience in the Japanese American incarceration camps. It’s due to be published in 2019 by First Second. If you’d like to see more of her work or get in touch with her, she can be found on her website or on Twitter at @geniusbeee.
Remember, only the first print run will feature these endpapers, so make sure you grab yours early!
