Handpicked: Lidkoeb

Copenhagen

We have been embracing all things Hygge this autumn and where better to experience it than in its birthplace, Copenhagen. Naturally, our first stop was a bar and Lidkoeb has hygge in abundance. From the crackling fire to the retro desklamps on each tabletop, you couldn’t feel more cosy and relaxed as you sip your expertly concocted cocktail. Hidden away behind a cobbled courtyard, the unremarkable closed door with discreet signage belies its charming interior. Originally built by pharmacist H.P. Madsen in 1886, the three storey building used to house the production facility of Vesterbro pharmacy until the late 1980s before being adopted at the start of this decade and transformed into its current guise. We began with a Blomster & Bobler made with homemade rose and Szechuan pepper syrup and we weren’t disappointed. Other tipples to tickle our tastebuds included the Nordisk Samba and the delightfully named Hipster Kaffe. Whisky fans should be sure to visit on a weekend evening when they open their dedicated whisky bar under the roof. Lidkoeb is the lesser known sister of Ruby cocktail bar in Copenhagen which is also well worth a visit but we really fell for the charm of this place.
