The Daily Dot’s Best Nine Fantasy Series

In September last year, The Daily Dot published an article of interest to Gateway readers (yes, we know we’re late picking up on this. Sorry – we were distracted!).

Headlined ‘The 9 Best Fantasy Book Series‘ with the subheadline ‘If you love ‘Game of Thrones,’ this list is for you’, the piece goes on to open proceedings with:

There may have been a time when fantasy novels were the stuff of bookworms and nerds, but in the past 20 years, tales of witches, elves, magic, and richly imagined other worlds have gone gloriously mainstream.

Excellent. We’re in. The article then takes readers on a quick tour of nine recommended Fantasy series and we can’t help but notice that three of them are ours.

At No. 3, is Terry Pratchett‘s wonderful Discworld series, the first twenty-one books of which are published by our sister imprint Gollancz, in the lovely hardback editions of The Discworld Collector’s Library.

At No. 5 is Ursula K. Le Guin‘s incomparable Earthsea sequence. Perhaps the most influential fantasy series of the last fifty years, by one of the most important and beloved writers in the Science Fiction and Fantasy field.

And at No. 9 is a series that should be much, much better known than it is. Few sequences can have gathered praise from so many genre greats – George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Guy Gavriel Kay, Elizabeth Bear, Holly Black, Gene Wolfe, Jo Walton and Gregory Maguire are just some of the writers who have lavished praise on Ellen Kushner‘s Riverside series.

So, what are you waiting for?  Go forth and read!
