Gateway Essentials: Mary Gentle

Following on from yesterday’s post, we offer up another serving of Essential Fantasy . .  . or is it Essential SF? Well, some of it’s SF. But some of the SF kinda looks like Fantasy.  Whatever it is, it’s certainly essential. And it’s the handiwork of the multi-talented Mary Gentle . . .

Mary Gentle is one of the world’s most acclaimed writers of fantasy and science fiction. Her magnificent epic, Ash: A Secret History, is one of the largest single fantasy works ever published and combines the authentic details of Bernard Cornwell with the magical storytelling of Terry Goodkind. It won the BSFA Award for best novel and was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the James Tiptree Jr Memorial Award and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. Mary Gentle has a number of academic degrees, including an MA in War Studies, and has hands-on experience of sword-fighting and armour, amongst many other useful talents.
